199th I-35 Widening For Mahaffie Street Extension
Owner: Kansas Department of Transportation
Team Members: Pyramid Contractors Inc.
Project Cost: $5,440,194.37
Overview:
To allow for the future connectivity of Mahaffie Street to allow greater access to the Garmin Headquarters in Olathe, the existing I-35 Bridge over the BNSF Railroad needed to be lengthened. In order to lengthen the bridge, the original design called for full removal of the existing North bridge abutment, excavating the embankment below and constructing a new pier with expansion joint, and abutment. Based on previous project experience, Pyramid presented a concept to utilize the existing piling in the North abutment to support the new pier cap and expansion joint while constructing a retaining wall to hold back the existing embankment. KDOT accepted this concept and in turn, turned a Design-Bid-Build project into a Design-Build project. This concept created a no cost change to KDOT and completed the project six-months ahead of schedule.
